Some Powerful Characteristics of the House Churches in China

These are some powerful ways that God is working in the house Churches in China. May it stir us to believe firstly that God is real and a living God today. And that He desires to have a new testimony in the West of His Church that trusts Him and glorifies Jesus Christ and not men or miracles! May God do this as we all step out to gather in small gatherings under the Headship of Jesus Christ. And have renewed faith to boldly share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

1. House churches are indigenous to China.
House Churches are not affiliated or associated with any organization and certainly have no formal ties with any Christian churches outside China. When the organized churches were destroyed in the Cultural Revolution, traditional forms of Christian ministry were also done away with. The dynamics of house churches, therefore, flow partly from their freedom from institutional and traditional bondage. Without an institutional and hierarchic structure the house churches rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance. Just like the Holy Spirit gave directions to the early Christians the house churches also receive direct instructions from the Holy Spirit.

2. House churches rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.

The house churches operate through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  At the time when there were few Bibles in China God had anointed a sister with a special charismatic gift of reciting Bible verses. God feeds His people with His word if they hunger for it. A sister in the house churches recounts this testimony: While the family was praying for guidance God spoke to them through interpretation of tongues and gave them a message. God told them they have a mission to warn all the Christians in the free world that they have to prepare themselves for the coming Great Tribulation. The Christians in the western countries will experience the same kind of sufferings and persecutions that the Christians in China went through.

3. The house churches abound with miracles, signs and wonders

It is said over 80% of house church christians follow Christ because a miracle verified the Gospel for them. How else can you convince atheists there is a One True God? “God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.” (Hebrews. 2:4).

“After singing praises they all knelt down and prayed in unison. Many were praying in the Spirit; some laid hands on him calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Within a few minutes Tong felt the pain in his right thigh was gone. The wound had healed instantly. He was released from the hospital without amputation. Brother Tong showed me the scar on his right thigh. He looked at me and smiled, “This is how I came to know Jesus. Praise God, HalleluYah!” He then picked up the phone and called long distance to a relative in Indonesia and witnessed to him about the Lord Jesus Christ”

4. The house churches receive God’s protection

In order to avoid detection by the Chinese Communist government water baptismal sites are often obscured, remote and hard to find.

At one time over six hundred believers in a certain locality had to be baptized. The leaders had chosen a national holiday because they figured on that day the number of Communist military men on duty would be minimal. The baptism was to be administered at night so that the movements of the believers could be kept secret. They had chosen a river deep inside a mountainous area that could only be reached by walking through a ravine. There was only one way in and a one way out. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ over six hundred believers were baptized into Him without a hitch in the river that night. It was still dark when the believers started walking out of the baptismal site. When they almost came to the opening of the ravine the dawn was beginning to break. They saw something that perplexed them.

There were many guns strewn all over the place, but no one was there. Everybody praised the Lord that the baptism was carried out successfully.

On the following day a house church brother overheard the conversation between two soldiers in the marketplace.

One soldier was saying to the other: “It was weird yesterday. We received information that many
Christians were inside the ravine. We were setting an ambush for them. Suddenly an army of giants appeared.

They had shiny white uniforms. We did not shoot them because the gunshots would let the Christians know we were there. The giants were big and strong and they were coming straight at us with their drawn swords. Every one of us got so scared that we left our weapons and ran for our dear lives. . . .” God protects His Church.

Encouraging Hymns for Guidance and Praise

In the some to be published free Principles Book there are 60 hymns at the end of the volume as a resource to small groups and house Churches. May God teach us anew the wonderful truths and blessings from these old songs written out of godly experience and testings.

19

Father I thank you for guiding my way;

Father I thank you for care every day;

Father You have done all things perfectly;

You always think of me lovingly.

Father, I thank You in midst of my pain:

Father, I thank You again and again.

Chastening is the best “bread” for me;

Chastening will end my sin’s misery.

Father, Your goodness fills each of your deeds;

 Father, Your chastening is what my soul needs.

Father, the outcome of paths of pain

Can be but blessing and glorious gain.

Into Your hands I commit all, my Lord.

For I know suffering will bring rich reward.

I love the hand that is chastening me,

For it is training and healing me.

Firm shall my hold of my Father’s hand be;

Safe through the darkest night you will lead me.

Father then bring me home to the throne,

Through pain transform me and grant me a crown.

Almighty Father, majestic and great,

Whom all the angels must serve and obey,

You send them out to Your child in need,

Showing Your might and assisting me.

So I will endure in distress and dark night.

Soon You will show me the bright morning light.

 Countless the times You have poured blessing on me.

Father, my heart thanks You gratefully.

20

Take my life, and let it be

consecrated, Lord, to You.

Take my moments and my days;

let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands, and let them move

at the impulse of Your love.

Take my feet, and let them be

swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice, and let me sing

always, only, for my King.

Take my lips, and let them be filled

with messages from You.

Take my silver and my gold;

not a portion would I withhold.

Take my intellect, and use

every power as You will choose.

Take my will, and make it Yours;

it shall be no longer mine.

Take my heart, it is Your own;

it shall be Your royal throne.

Take my love, my Lord,

I pour at Your feet its treasure store.

Take myself, and I will be

ever, only, all for You.

21

What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,

burdened with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake you?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In his arms He will take and shield you;

you will find a peace there.

What Is A Chinese House Church Like? Meeting In the Same Way in the West

Dear Saints, this article is from WorldServe ministries.  Is there not a need for us to count the cost in the West and decide to meet in a way that is not typical, normal or mundane. Do we come to gather together to hear from God to experience God and to surrender all to the Lord? Is there a desperation in us to grow more in our Christian walks? Do we desire to be a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2)?  Are we bold to share Christ with others or are we following in the ways of the world being accepted by everyone?

—–

Being a Christian in China effectively involves making a political choice: deciding whether to worship at a government-approved church, or at an unofficial gathering known as a “house church.”

The growing unregistered house church movement started among peasants in rural areas, and grew rapidly in the 1970s and 1980s. More recently it has continued expanding among students, intellectuals and professionals in urban China.

Chinese house churches are vibrant and inspiring. Joy and excitement permeate the service. Limited space and fear of the authorities create a closely-knit, family fellowship. For security reasons, members are often discouraged from inviting visitors to the main service. Instead, seekers are invited to a separate evangelistic meeting until their faith is better established. Such an atmosphere produces an inspiring, authentic worship experience.

Joy And Excitement Permeate The Service
On Sunday mornings in Beijing, worship songs can be heard coming from a high-rise apartment complex. Each week, more than 50 people quietly file up three flights of stairs into a small, two-bedroom apartment. Members are reminded to keep quiet in the hallways, so as not to bother the neighbors. Once inside, however, subdued demeanors transform into a room full of smiling faces. Every seat in the room is filled with students and young adults. Latecomers sit in hallways and bedrooms, where they have to strain to hear the message. The service includes Chinese worship songs, mixed with an occasional familiar Western hymn or praise chorus. The speaker comes from a rotating roster of local pastors, evangelists and lay leaders who circuit through a network of a dozen congregations throughout the city.

By contrast, in the house churches of China’s dusty rural villages, worshippers gather in freezing, bare rooms with earthen floors, furnished with little more than a handful of wooden stools and a Bible, if they are lucky, to follow an unofficial prayer leader. Some churches don’t have a complete Bible, others only have one copy of the Bible for the entire congregation and in some instances, believers are told to memorize what pages they can from the Bible and pass them on to others in need. Church leaders rarely have formal Biblical training and are most likely local farmers sorely lacking in resources although they often lead groups of between 100 to 10,000 people.

Everything We Do Without The Spirit Is A Waste of Time

It seems like one of the most simpliest truths but it truly is one of the most important. The Church is powerless with the Holy Spirit of God. In the flesh without the indwelling Holy Spirit children of God are fully incapable of doing the Lord’s Will. We may repent but never be able to be obedient without the empowering of the Holy Spirit. This short article and thought were written by brother Arthur from Canada. It is a wonderful sobering reminder to us as we seek to gather under the Headship of Jesus Christ in local areas:

Everything we do without the Spirit, preaching, evangelizing, etc is dead works, waste of time

There is a big difference between handing a tract or speaking to someone about the gospel with the Holy Spirit present and without Him

Without Him it is a work of the flesh

(There is some quote by Corrie Ten Boom that says doing God’s work without the Spirit is the most burdensome and ineffective thing in the world)

Why do we not realize that it is possible to do God’s work without the Spirit

Of course many other things are worldly and we stay away from them but why when it comes to preaching or evangelism all of a sudden it is no longer worldly and God is all of a sudden involved

No, this is a great deception

Preaching and evangelism is just as worldly as any other activity if God is not involved

It is powerless and useless without the Holy Spirit

It is a waste of time because we in our flesh cannot do anything spiritual

It may look spiritual

We do a fine job of convincing our conscience

We think all we have to do is proclaim the gospel and hand out tracts God will save people

But we forget that God must initially be with us when we are handing out the tract or proclaiming the gospel for the work to be effective

Otherwise it is powerless

Might as well hand a newspaper instead of a tract, there is no difference because without the Holy Spirit you can give a million tracts and none of them will make a difference

Might as well preach about the news rather than the good news of Christ because you can preach for years without the Spirit and none of those sermons or messages will make a difference, none will have the power to save people

There is a huge difference between doing things in the flesh and in the Spirit

Don’t we see that we can do just about anything in the flesh including preaching the gospel and evangelizing

Those things (preaching, evangelism etc) are not exempt from things that are possible to be done without the Spirit

The greatest tragedy is that we can fool ourselves to think we are doing God’s work by preaching and witnessing when the whole time God is not involved in it

If God is not involved you can scream the gospel on the street day and night and nothing will happen

It is a work by our strength rather than with Him

It doesn’t remain in that day

It is wood hay stubble and will be tested by fire and be revealed for what it is.

A Powerful Message To Be A Living Sacrifice For Our Lord (audio)

Dear brothers and sisters, please be encouraged to listen to this message. This is a powerful exhortation for us to consider if we are truly being living sacrifices to the Lord. Brother Edgar gives us some examples from precious believers in underground Churches in Iran, China and North Korea that are being living sacrifices for their Lord. May we follow the Lord as living sacrifices today. If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins so we can be living sacrifices and be full-hearted disciples.

Lord Let Your Fire Fall! by Edgar Reich (audio mp3)

Topic: Living Sacrifice
Scripture(s): Romans 12:1-2

Description: Brother Edgar shares a convicting message from the exhortation of brother Paul the Apostle to be a living sacrifice. He shares the old Testament type of what a sacrifice is and how the Lord is calling us in the New Covenant to be a sacrifice for our Lord. He shares many sins and reasons why we do not allow ourselves to be a sacrifice.

Powerful testimonies from the Chinese underground Church

These are excerpts from the soon to be released free Principles for the Gathering of Believers book:

Without a strong institutional and hierarchic structure some of the house Churches rely on the Holy Spirit for 100% guidance. Just like the Holy Spirit gave directions to the early Christians the house Churches also receive direct instructions from the Holy Spirit.

During the Communist Cultural Revolution Bibles were scarce and difficult to obtain. A house Church prayed and asked the Lord Jesus Christ to give them His Word. There was an elderly deaconess who was over eighty years old. She had totally fasted (abstention from food and water) and prayed for nineteen days. She became filled with the Holy Spirit and would sit in the middle of the house Church. Everyone would sit around her. Through the unction of the Holy Spirit this sister would recite Bible verses loudly and clearly, and every one would write down the words in their books. Every word is the Word of God. At the time when there were few Bibles in China God had anointed a sister with a special charismatic gift of reciting Bible verses.

God has given us the Holy Spirit not only as a comforter and guide but also as a life-changing power. Any work done in peoples’ lives, without the Holy Spirit is void of any life-changes. In Zechariah this truth is shown where it says: “So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord Almighty.’”

Yet many are denying the life-changing power of God and His Spirit: “Having a form of godliness but denying its power.”

 The Holy Spirit gives us the power to witness, as in Acts 1:8, but we must ask Him and we must surrender to Him.

Brother Enguan from the Lixin underground house Church network gives this testimony: “We were one of the most heavily-persecuted churches in all of China. The police regularly swept through our area and conducted sting operations. Every year more than one hundred leaders would be arrested. Christians in our area were not Christians for long before they were rounded up by the police. You would have one believer who had been a believer for six years and had served five and a half of those years in prison. It was not uncommon to have believers that were baby Christians only being saved for a month or more before being martyred for their faith. This was life in those days. Those were hard days.”

A Gospel Tract exalting the person of the Lord Jesus Christ

We want to encourage individual believers and gatherings of saints to consider ordering a free box of 500 of these tracts from World Missionary Press. The name of the Tract is: “The Amazing Life of Jesus Christ.”

some more excerpts from the booklet:

JESUS TEACHES THROUGH PARABLES

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. Now everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall” —Matthew 7:24-27

“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.” —Luke 15:4-7

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT BEING A DISCIPLE

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” —Matthew 16:24-26a
“So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” —Luke 14:33

“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” —John 14:15

“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” —John 15:12

“By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” —John 13:35

Then Jesus said to those . . . who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” —John 8:31

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.” —John 15:8

JESUS HAS POWER OVER DISEASE

And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. —Matthew 8:2-3

And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and imme diately she was made straight, and glorified God. —Luke 13:11-13
Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them those who were lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus’ feet, and He healed them. —Matthew 15:30

But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once. So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them. —Mark 1:30-31

JESUS HAS POWER TO FORGIVE SINS

“But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” And he arose and departed to his house. —Matthew 9:6-7
And He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” —Luke 7:48-49

“Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.” —Acts 13:38-39

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace. —Ephesians 1:7

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. —1 John 1:9

Powerful Free Tract Booklet speaking of the life of Jesus Christ

Dear Saints, this is a powerful free resource for the body of Christ. They have produced this tract booklet in many languages and the Lord has been using it mightily all over the world. The booklet purely contains Scriptures on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It speaks of his purpose, plan and coming judgment. It leads men to find new life in Jesus Christ away from the broken cisterns of this world.

We want to encourage individual believers and gatherings of saints to consider ordering a free box of 500 of these tracts from World Missionary Press. The name of the Tract is: “The Amazing Life of Jesus Christ.”

Here is an excerpt from the booklet:

JESUS IS WORSHIPED — 8

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

When Herod the king heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet….”

When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. —Matthew 2:1-5, 9-11

JESUS CALLS HIS DISCIPLES — 13

And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, “Come after Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed Him. When He had gone a little farther…, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him. —Mark 1:16-20
The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” —John 1:43

And as He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow Me.” And he arose and followed Him. —Mark 2:14

He . . . continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Him; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles. —Luke 6:12b-13

JESUS OFFERS NEW LIFE — 16

Jesus… said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” —John 3:3,7, 16
“I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” —John 10:10b

“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” —John 17:3

“For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” —John 5:21,24

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT HEAVEN AND HELL — 22

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” —Matthew 7:21

“Unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” —Matthew 18:3b
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.” —Matthew 7:13-14

“So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” —Matthew 13:49-50

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” —John 14:1-3

JESUS WILL JUDGE THE WORLD — 46

“God … now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” —Acts 17:30b-31a

“Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” —Matthew 7:22-23

Each of us shall give account of himself to God. —Romans 14:12b

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness …? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. —2 Peter 3:10-13
